Recipe: Vanillerostbraten |
Vanillerostbraten ("vanilla roast beef") is a traditional Austrian dish, which despite its name doesn't contain any Vanilla. One of the main ingredients of the dish is actually garlic, which was called "vanilla of the poor man" (Vanille des kleinen Mannes) in the past.
800g | beef ("Beiried", roast beef, boneless, cutlets, marbled with fat) |
~20 | garlic cloves |
salt | |
pepper | |
butter | |
oil | |
flour | |
1 | bouillon cube (for 500ml water) |
potatoes as side dish | |
NO | vanilla |
Tenderise the meat, then put salt and pepper on both sides.
Press about 1/3 of the garlic cloves and spread the garlic on the meat.
Cover the meat with some flour.
Heat some oil in a deep pan and sear the meat for about 1-2 minutes on each side.
Cut the rest of the garlic in thin slices.
Take the meat out of the pan and melt about 2-3 table spoons of butter in the same pan.
Brown the garlic slices slightly in the butter.
Add 500ml of water and a bouillon cube (or 500ml of soup if you have some at hand already).
Add the meat back into the sauce. Cover and let it simmer for about 20-30 minutes.
Serve with potatoes and enjoy :)
